Winter in the POW Camp

Questions for Chick

During the winter, I’ve been to Japan, I know it’s very cold – did they provide you with anything?

[Chick shakes his head.]

You just had basic all through the year? That’s it. They gave us uniforms which was made of compressed paper and they didn’t last five minutes, you know, working. I mean you’re flogging your guts out shovelling coal and all the rest of it. I mean it was, as you said, freezing cold in winter and that’s why we got pneumonia and all the rest of it. Then we had roasting hot summer. From memory, they only seem to have two seasons there – winter, summer, the spring and the autumn was short.
