In England, In the RAF

First of all, like a lot of young men in me time, I was in the services. I joined the RAF during 1940 at the age of 20 – at the time of the Battle of Britain. I did my training and all the rest of it. One day I was sitting in an aerodrome down in Lincolnshire. It was freezing, perishing cold, and the word came across that they wanted six riggers for the Middle East. I says, put me name down! So they put me name down for the Middle East and they gave us a week’s leave. I came back and went across to Liverpool but the draft had gone, so I was sent to the Far East instead!
