The Best Meal I Ever Had
We had been advised to put PW on top of the camp. So I put PW in big white letters. American bombers came over, the bomb doors were open and manna from heaven, all the parachutes came down with the food, the razor blades, Red Cross parcels, meat, corned beef, condensed milk. Oh, wonderful, all this stuff! The best meal I ever had was with a tin of corned beef – I had never seen meat for three and a half years; a tin of corned beef and a tin of condensed milk over it – the best bloody meal I’ve had in my life. I was as sick as a dog but by, I didn’t half enjoy it! [Laughs.] We were told to be a bit careful what you eat, because, you know, you’ve been on starvation all these years, if you start to pack your stomach, things are going to happen.
